‘Участниц Pussy Riot задержали за акцию в Якутске’

Two members of the punk band Pussy Riot – Maria Alekhina and Olga Borisova –have been detained in Yakutsk. The reason – their participation in an unauthorized rally in support of filmmaker Oleg Sentsov. Sentsov is currently in the Yakutsk Correctional Labour Colony no. 1, after he was sentenced by the North Caucasian District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don.

After being detained in 2014 in the Crimea, Oleg Sentsov was sentenced to 20 years in a strict-regime colony. Interfax reminds us that he is accused of organizing a terrorist network in the Crimea. Near the colony where Sentsov is imprisoned, members of the group ‘Pussy Riot’ unfurled a poster with the inscription “Free Sentsov”.

The girls’ car was stopped by police while leaving the colony, and the protesters were brought to the police station.

Members of the punk-rock band Pussy Riot became widely known to the public at the end of February 2012. They then staged a “punk church service” in the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. The video of their performance was uploaded to the Internet, and was later banned by court order.

The police detained three protesters – Nadezhda Tolokonnikova , Maria Alekhina and Ekaterina Samutsevich. The Khamovniki court sentenced them to two years in a general-regime colony for hooliganism. The Moscow City Court then changed Samutsevich’s penalty to a suspended sentence and released her from custody in the courtroom.

Alekhina and Tolokonnikova were released under amnesty for the 20th anniversary of the Russian Constitution in December 2013, 5 months before the sentence set by the court was supposed to end.
